Neuropathy is damage or dysfunction of nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling and pain in the affected area. Peripheral neuropathy, indicates a problem in nerves outside of your central nervous system.
Your peripheral nervous system is the network of nerves outside your brain and spinal cord. Your brain and spinal cord make up your central nervous system. Think of the two systems working together this way: Your central nervous system is the central station. It is the control center, the hub from which all trains come and go. Your peripheral nervous system are the tracks that connect to the central station.
The tracks (the network of nerves) allow the trains (information signals) to travel to and from the central station (your brain and spinal cord). Neuropathy results when nerve cells, called neurons, are damaged or destroyed. This disrupts the way the neurons communicate with each other and with the brain. Neuropathy can affect one nerve (mononeuropathy) or nerve type, a combination of nerves in a limited area (multifocal neuropathy) or many peripheral nerves throughout the body (polyneuropathy).
The most common symptoms you are likely to experience if you have neuropathy in the feet are burning, numbness, tingling, or shooting or stabbing pain. Health conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome can also be a symptom of neuropathy. If you notice a change in sensation in your fingers or toes, it could be a symptom of peripheral neuropathy. Make sure to pay attention to abnormal sensations you experience and seek treatment BEFORE they start to affect your quality of life. Treating neuropathy is time sensitive. Getting treatment early in the process is critical and will result in significantly better results. These sensations can also be a sign of another problem, like diabetes so it’s always best to inform your doctor as soon as possible.
The most common cause of neuropathy in the United States is Diabetes. According to the ADA, 60% to 70% of people with diabetes will develop neuropathy which is referred to as diabetic neuropathy. There are other common causes of neuropathy, including:
